NHL Morning Skate for Feb. 18: Canada and USA Set for Championship Showdown

The championship game of the 4 Nations Face-Off is set for Thursday at 8 p. m. ET on ESPN, ESPN+, SN, and TVAS, where longtime rivals Canada and the USA will write the next chapter in their storied rivalry. This will mark the first time since the 2010 Winter Olympics that these two countries will face off in a championship match of a best-on-best mens international tournament, and it will be only the second such final held on U. S. soil, the first being at the 2002 Olympics Adrian Kempe 4NF Jersey.

Both teams have had strong performances leading up to this point. Connor McDavid, Nathan MacKinnon, Sidney Crosby, and Sam Reinhart all recorded multi-point games to help propel Canada to the final. The USA has a storied history with Canada in international hockey, and this matchup will be the third time the two countries meet in a championship game at an NHL International Tournament, with each side having claimed a victory once. The USA won at the 1996 World Cup of Hockey, while Canada triumphed at the 1991 Canada Cup. The 1996 World Cup remains the only tournament where the USA defeated Canada twice, including in the best-of-three final. Their last head-to-head in best-on-best play was during the 2010 Olympics, where the USA won in the preliminary round, but Canada took home the gold.

Canadas New Lines and Fast Start Propel Them to the Final
In the first-ever NHL International Tournament game held in Boston, Canada made an early statement with Connor McDavid, the reigning Conn Smythe Trophy winner, scoring the opening goal for the second consecutive game. That early lead helped Canada establish a dominant 4-0 advantage. The newly formed line of Sam Reinhart 0-3-3), Nathan MacKinnon 2-0-2), and Sidney Crosby 1-1-2) combined for three of Canada's five goals in the game. Canadas performance so far in the 4 Nations Face-Off continues their legacy of success in NHL International Tournaments.

This will be the fifth time that Canada and the USA meet in a gold medal game at an NHL International Tournament or Olympics. Overall, Canada holds a 3-1 advantage in these matchups, including a win in the 2010 Olympic gold medal game.
